PTTC Partners with CFL and PCE in the conduct of 4th Negosyo sa Barangay to promote Agritourism

More than a 600 barangay leaders converged at Punta Villa Resort, Iloilo City held on 12-15 July 2015 conducted jointly byCenter for Future Leadership (CFL), Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE) and the DTI-Philippine Trade Training Center
(PTTC). The theme for the 4-day event is “Leveraging Barangays through Agritourism: Focus on Agribusiness” to promoteagri-based entrepreneurship for their constitutents.

PTTC Executive Director Nestor P. Palabyab, during his opening message, said, “the future belongs to the people who take risk and engage in business. It is not a happy occasion that our kababayans become separated from their family to work abroad.
The best is we are here, serving our countrymen, making contributions to society to alleviate poverty and making it possible to hire people rather than sending them away. This is the reason that the DTI partners with organization in providing assistance
to people to go into business and training is one of them.” Dir. Palabyab cited CNN’s survey that the Philippines rank number two in top tourist destination in the world. The ASEAN integration is upon us, the dictum in our agriculture is whatever we can
produce, with proper marketing effort we can sell to the world.

The event was graced by Senator Cynthia Villar, Chair of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food. Sen. Villar, who is an advocate of agribusiness and agritourism said that agritourism will bring back the glory days of agriculture in the Philippines. She added that farm tourism will solve the problem of urban migration in the country. If there is a development in rural areas, urban migration can be lessen or avoided. The event had six (6) plenary sessions where different entrepreneurs shared their success stories in the agribusiness and agritourism.

The DTI-PTTC, on the other hand, gave lectures on the Barangay Micro Business Enterprises Act of 2002, Go Negosyo Act and Bottoms Up Budgeting to inform them on the pertinent laws that can help SMEs. PTTC Acting Deputy Executive Director Elizabeth Manuel also briefly discussed what agribusiness and agritourism are and gave examples of success stories from different regions in the country as a take off point to the preparation of action plan to promote agribusiness and agritourism in their respective places. Out of 31 action plans presented, five were selected outstanding. In her closing remarks, Acting Deputy Executive Director Manuel thanked the barangay officials for being part of the event. She also encouraged them to
support and promote agribusiness and agritourism in their respective barangays.
