PTTC Enables The Differently Abled With Entrepreneurial Skills

The Philippine Trade Training Center recently conducted a comprehensive entrepreneurship development program for the beneficiaries of the Philippine Council of Cheshire Homes for the Disabled (PhilCOCHED) from February 15-23, 2010 at the PhilCOCHED headquarters in Cubao, Quezon City. PhilCOCHED is a non-stock, non-profit organization that advocates the rights and dignity of the differently-abled.

It has embarked on a two-year pilot project called “Economic Empowerment Program” aimed to transform the differently-abled into highly productive members of the community ensuring that their right to work is duly recognized. And to further emphasize this advocacy, a tie-up has been inked between this organization and PTTC, to conduct a series of business start-up seminars.

The first batch composed of 11 visually impaired individuals and 9 paraplegics were taught on how to properly prepare for and start their own businesses. The training program began with a self-assessment workshop to identify the participants’ entrepreneurial competencies necessary in building an enterprise.

Other topics covered were: business idea generation, choosing the right business, marketing basics, business recording, costing and pricing, and business plan writing. A business simulation exercise was likewise conducted, using the Business Expense Savings Training (BEST) Game module. Though the seminar has ended, PTTC still continues to assist these participants by helping them come up with their respective business plans required in acquiring loans to launch their businesses.
