Food Safety Management Course leading to a Master’s Degree in Food Science to start in June

Two of the country’s leading institutions, the Department of Trade and Industry’s Philippine Trade Training Center and the Philippine Women’s University – School of Science and Technology developed a first-of-a-kind educational program for all the prime movers in the food industry.  Entitled “Diploma in Food Safety Management”, the course has recently been recognized by the Commission on Higher Education.

“The Diploma in Food Safety Management is an interactive learning, job-oriented, value-laden and experience-based educational program that leads to a Master of Science (MS) in Food Science specializing in Food Safety Management”, DTI Secretary Jesli Lapus announced.

“With the global concern on food safety to combat the emergence of food-borne diseases, safety measures in the “farm-to-fork” food chain should be applied according to international regulations, legislations and guidelines, said DTI Secretary Lapus,  “This program is indeed the ultimate solution to equip food producers the skills and competence  in establishing food safety management systems in operations” .

Various opportunities await those who complete the program such as engagement in consultancy and mentoring services; production of safe and high quality food; jobs in international research institutions; a career in food safety education in prestigious universities; and expansion of food business.

A formidable line up of highly respected Food Safety experts will lead the program:  PWU Dean Emeritus and Head, Cluster of Food Science, Tourism and Hospitality Management Ignacio S. Pablo, Sc.D.; PWU Dean, School of Food Science and Technology Ligaya T. Braganza, Ed.D; PTTC Food Safety & Quality Expert and Consultant Engr. Menandro Ortego; DOST Packaging Technology Division Head Daisy Tañafranca; PWU Asst. Professor Ma. Divina S. Alcasabas; and Food Consultants and Lecturers Rosemarie P. Tingzon-Kwan, Ma. Concepcion C. Lizada PhD, and Ma. Luz Lizada.

The Diploma Course will start in June 2010 and can be completed in one (1 year) at four (4) intakes on a trimestral basis.  Units may be earned upon completion of PTTC food safety- related trainings.
